Amir Khan is still hoping the authorities to change Peterson fight results – Boxing News
British-Pakistani fighter Amir Khan is still hoping for the authorities to change his loss decision to Peterson to ‘No Contest’. Khan has already been reinstated as the light welterweight titlist by the World Boxing Association, for which the Bolton proud
is quite thankful.
“I walk into this fight as world champion and the WBC title is on the line but, not only that, the Ring magazine title will be on the line as well,” Khan said regarding his fight against Danny Garcia scheduled for July 14 at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino.
Khan added, “Justice has been done. I've got the title back that I should never have lost and I'm happy the WBA has done it. I still hope the authorities do change the last fight to a 'no contest' because he was cheating in that fight and he admits he took
testosterone before that last fight.”
When asked if he wants anything from the authorities, Khan said, “Maybe it should be changed to a no contest and that's maybe why the WBA has given me the world title back. Let's just wait and see what happens.”
Khan lost the WBA and IBF unified titles to Lamont Peterson in December last year. It was an appalling sight for Khan’s camp, fans and his trainer Freddie Roach. There were several irregularities in the fight which made Khan believe something was fishy.
Khan got a rematch by the IBF and was all set to take on Peterson once again, just when news of Peterson’s drug test surfaced. The rematch was cancelled, leaving Khan dismantled over the entire issue. Khan then appealed to the IBF to strip Peterson off the
titles and reverse the fight decision.
The IBF has not yet made any announcements but the WBA has. Yesterday, the association reinstated Khan as the champion. According to a press statement issued by the WBA, no champion can retain the title if he is found guilty of consuming drugs.
In this very context, Khan will now enter the ring as the WBA light welterweight title against the WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia.
