Amir Khan parts ways with Freddie Roach – Boxing News
As expected, former WBA and IBF unified light welterweight titlist Amir Khan has fired Hall of Famer trainer Freddie Roach. Roach as at the weigh-in for Sergio Martinez and Julio Cesar Chavez when called him to reveal the news.
“He said, 'I know you're busy with your other fighters and I'm going to go in a different direction,’” said Roach to ESPN.com. “He said, 'No hard feelings, maybe we'll get back together someday.' He was being nice. I wished him luck. I've been fired before.”
On the other hand, Khan made the news public through his Twitter, “Officially, I've left Freddie Roach. Just spoke to him and had a good professional chat and maybe in the future we work together.
“Freddie understood why I'm looking at other trainers and wished me all the best for the future.”
There is no news regarding who will be Khan’s new trainer. The closest guess is that it might be Virgil Hunter, trainer for super middleweight champion Andre Ward.
Virgil flew to the New York earlier this week after his fighter knocked out Chad ‘Bad’ Dawson. Supposedly, a meeting between Virgil and Khan was scheduled to discuss the details of the plan.
Pedro Diaz, trainer for Puerto Rican fighter Miguel Cotto, is also in the list.
Since his knockout lost to Danny Garcia on July 14 at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Club, Khan has been talking about either changing his trainer or adding a new defence trainer to his arsenal. There were already speculations of Khan going firing Roach but nothing
was for sure.
As of now, Khan has officially revealed that he is no longer with the Hall of Famer. According to Khan, Freddie Roach was unable to give him enough time. Repeatedly, Khan urged Roach to focus on him more but the Hall of Famer trainer asserted that his number
one priority will always be Filipino fighter Manny Pacquiao.
Khan now wants to move ahead with a trainer who can give him enough time to train. Khan wants to mainly work on his defence in order to avoid any knockout defeats in the future.
