Amir Khan quashes all doubts, beats Marcos Maidana; trainer thinks he’s ready for
Floyd Mayweather
British boxer Amir Khan is of the view that he has silenced his critics with his thrashing victory against Argentinean veteran Marcos Maidana. With this victory, the 24-year-old has successfully retained his world welterweight
title.
"Those people who say Amir Khan can't take a shot, I've proved to them that I can,” said Khan in a press conference. “I'm sure I've shut a lot of people up."
Khan’s bout against 27-year-old Maidana, who has 27 knockout victories to his name, was nothing short of an immense challenge. An overhand punch from Maidana in the 10th round of the match almost knocked Khan out. But
the Bolton fighter somehow stayed standing till the end of the match to record one of the most memorable wins of his boxing career.
"Maidana is a strong puncher," said Khan, who was taken for a precautionary CAT scan after the match. "He hit me with some big shots and my chin was tested, but I proved I've got a chin. I took everything he gave me.”
Maidana, meanwhile, was deeply disappointed as he spoke to the press after the match, but expressed the view that Khan won the match because he upped his game in the last rounds of the bout. He believed it had been a very close
match and looked forward to facing Khan again.
Khan won the match in a unanimous decision as the judges scored it 114-111 (twice) and 113-112 to Khan, who remains on track to fight the winner of Devon Alexander's clash with Timothy Bradley next month. That fight will be Khan’s
chance to become the champion of th 140-pounders.
Meanwhile, Khan’s trainer Freddie Roach is confident that “King Khan” is capable of beating any rival, including unbeaten 33-year-old American boxing champ Floyd Mayweather.
“It would be a fight I would welcome,” said Roach.
