Amir Khan regretful over losing track against Lamont Peterson – Boxing News
Finally, former unified WBA (Super) & IBF Light Welterweight Amir Khan has admitted that he made some mistakes against Lamont Peterson. According to Khan, he lost track of his strategy, which benefited Peterson. Now, Khan plans on giving Peterson hard this time and he ensures he will not making any mistakes.
The British-Pakistani boxer had his first fight against Peterson in December 2011 with his IBF and WBA titles on the online. Unfortunately, Khan lost to Peterson in the latter’s hometown. However, Khan was not convinced with the results, especially when the referee deducted two points from his final score for pushing Peterson. A lot of controversy sprung up in the follow up of the match. Initially, Peterson refused to give Khan an immediate rematch but later on, he agreed to it. Now, both the fighters are scheduled to fight for the IBF and WBA titles on May 19.
In his recent interview, Khan iterated, “I do regret why we fought in Washington because I was the champion and didn’t have to. We had the chance to pick a neutral referee and I don’t know why we didn’t. But it’s all a learning curve for us. I don’t want to make the same mistakes. I know what not to do the next time. No more mistakes now. It’s a challenge for me to prove all the critics wrong and fix things. I believe I won the first time and I want to win so convincingly that there will be no doubt. Not even Peterson will be able to deny it.”
By January, Peterson was hoping to get a match against Manny Pacquiao for June 9. However, things did not quite work out the way Peterson wanted. Lamont then agreed to have a rematch against Khan to defend his titles. The reason why Peterson went for Khan was simply a ‘better package’. Khan’s side offered Peterson more than what he could imagine and Peterson agreed to it without any hesitations.
The rematch will take place at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas on May 19. Tickets for the fight will go on sale from tomorrow, Saturday.
