Amir Khan regrets not knowing about Olympics 2012’s London advent – Boxing News
Former WBA and IBF light welterweight titlist Amir Khan claims he would have stayed an amateur, only if he had known about Olympics 2012’s London advent. Amir ‘King’ Khan is an Athens Olympics silver medallist in the 2004 season.
Khan, who is now a world-renowned boxer, believes he could have kept his professional aims at a distance just to get his hands on the gold medals of Olympics.
“I may have stayed on because when you get a silver medal, you want to go on and beat it to get a gold medal,” said Khan to Gabby Logan on BBC’s Olympics Tonight.
Amir Khan is today one of the most prominent British athletes, who has won several titles in his division. He turned professional right after he won the silver medals and went on grabbing titles one after another. Khan won his first world title in 2009.
In 2011, he unified the division.
“The deals that were put in front of me (to turn pro) and I was only young as well, I was in two minds because I really wanted to stay amateur,” he added.
“Maybe if I had known that the 2012 Olympics were going to be in London then I might have stayed (amateur), because think about it, I am 25 and if you look at the other fighters fighting, like Anthony Ogogo and Joshua they are young, they are like 24, 25
like me, so I would have been in the same class as them.”
Khan is scheduled to participate in the 30th contest of his boxing career in December. The Bolton proud lost his WBA title to American unbeaten fighter Danny Garcia in a shocking, heart-breaking defeat. It was an important fight for the Briton. Since he
lost, it marked Khan’s second consecutive loss to an underdog.
As of now, Amir Khan is hopeful of making a strong comeback in his division and then probably move to a higher division. Khan’s 30th contest will be his career’s edging point, he would either make a statement by winning the contest or shatter his brand completely
by losing once again.
