Amir Khan says Marcos Maidana wants a rematch but he has bigger fish to fry – Boxing news
The current unified International Boxing Federation’s and World Boxing Association’s World Light Welterweight Champion, Amir Khan, has refused to offer Marcos Maidana a rematch, as Khan has revealed he has a bigger fish to fry.
The El Chino, Marcos Maidana and Amir Khan both had a title fight at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada back in December 2010. It was an enthralling battle which went all 12 rounds but in the end it was the Bolton’s finest, Khan, who appeared
on top and secured a unanimous win over the Argentinean warrior, Maidana, in front of a crowd of over 4,500 fans.
However, Maidana also fought very well and at a certain point in the 10th round he almost knocked out Khan but the Brit somehow survived the round. The fight was also rated as ‘Fight of the Year.’
Maidana since then is desperate to avenge his defeat against Khan, who is widely known as King Khan, but his offer has been turned down, as Khan has finally said he does not want to fight Maidana right now.
The 24-year-old Khan told the media Maidana was a mandatory challenger for him back in 2010 and therefore he took him on but in the current scenario, there is nothing like it.
Khan claimed he is not afraid of anyone but he wants to fight the winner of Erik Morales versus Lucas Matthysse bout before he goes up in the division.
While speaking on his inclusion, he said, “Maidana’s been saying I’m avoiding him and don’t want to fight him, but he was my mandatory a year ago and I beat him fair and square. Now he wants a rematch but I’ve got bigger fish to fry. There are other names
I want and I want them quickly because they might not be there again.”
Khan added, “I’ll fight anyone, but I really want to fight the winner of Morales and Matthysse. That would be another title in the bank.”
