Amir Khan goes head-to-head with WBC light-welterweight champion Danny Garcia on the 14th of July. However, the Bolton-born fighter has said that he is keen to renew rivalries with Lamont Peterson as soon as he can.
Khan lost his WBA and IBF titles to Peterson last December in only the second defeat of his professional career. However, the contest was marred in controversy with suspect scoring, a mysterious man in a hat patrolling ringside and of course Peterson’s subsequent positive test for synthetic testosterone.
A rematch was called off after Peterson tested positive leaving things hanging in limbo. As it stands Peterson keeps the belts and the win on his record, but that could all change and Khan remains keen to settle the old score.
"I would love to [fight Peterson again] because at the end of the day it was a great fight, a great fight for the fans," Khan told eastsideboxing.com.
"I would love to fight Lamont Peterson again if he is off steroids, but if he is still on them he is a threat to my career and my life.
"Other than that if it's going to be fair and he's not going to take anything, it will be an easy win for us.”
Instead of Peterson, Khan now faces Garcia in what will also be a thrilling showdown. Garcia is unbeaten and highly rated and so it is still a big test for Khan and a big night for fight fans.
The thought of avenging that defeat is still very much in Khan’s mind. Understandably, Khan is not prepared to risk his health by fighting Peterson until he has cleared his name and feels then that he should easily be able to deal with his threat.
"I think that's what kept him in the fight so long, because if he was not on anything I think I would have stopped him in a couple of rounds.,” added Khan.
"It shows that it helps an opponent when you take banned substances”
