Amir Khan talks about his split with Freddie Roach – Boxing News
While it is generally considered that former WBA and IBF unified champion Amir Khan’s split with Hall of Famer trainer Freddie Roach was due to the bitterness between the both, the Briton fighter claims he peacefully parted ways with Roach. In his recent
interview, Khan spoke about the split, saying that Roach is a great trainer but he needed a change in order to revive his career.
“I called him (Roach) myself,” said Khan while talking about the split. “I said, 'Freddie, I'm going to make a change.' Not many people would do that, but I'm the one who called him and said I'm going to move to Virgil Hunter. He wished me all the best,
and we left it at that.”
Khan hired Roach after his career’s first ever knockout against Breidis Prescott. Since then, the Briton remained undefeated for two consecutive years. Unfortunately, he suffered a huge knockout defeat at the hands of American unbeaten fighter Danny Garcia
earlier this year, which made him rethink over his career choices. Khan revealed that he lost to Garcia due to his weak defence mechanism, something that Roach could never build up.
Now, Khan is working with American trainer Virgil Hunter. He believes that Hunter has brought in some drastic changes to his fighting style.
“You'll see a new Amir Khan, for sure. An Amir Khan who is smarter, more focused, and thinking about himself instead of the crowd. I think my style will always please the crowd, but I'm going to be smart and think about everything, instead of jumping in
and making mistakes.”
Khan is currently scheduled to fight unbeaten American fighter Carlos Molina in December. For Khan, it is a career make or break fight. He knows the stakes are high for this one and he needs to win it by any means.
Khan also spoke of the recent allegations made on him by a couple of press agencies regarding him being unfaithful to his fiancé Faryal Makhdoom. Khan admitted the fact that the entire built up has surely distracted him from training but it is not a major
worry for him right now.
