Amir Khan talks about relationship with Virgil Hunter – Boxing News
Former WBA and IBF unified champion Amir Khan spoke to the media regarding his upcoming fight against unbeaten fighter Carlos Molina and his relationship with his new trainer Virgil Hunter. Khan is scheduled to fight Molina on December 15 at the Los Angeles
Sports Arena.
Khan was previously training under Hall of Famer trainer Freddie Roach. However, after two consecutive losses at the hands of Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia, Khan decided to change his trainer. He is now working with Virgil Hunter, the trainer who took
Andre Ward to new heights of success.
“We have spoken quite a bit already,” said Khan while talking about his training camp with Hunter. “We discussed the fact that I am an offensive fighter, but now it’s time to be a smart fighter, to win fights with my brain,” he added.
“He told me that he wants the type of fighter-trainer relationship where we get along really well together, where we don’t just see each other at the gym. We will watch tapes together and work out our game plan together. With Virgil, that is a style that
will work for me,” added the Briton fighter who is looking forward to add some victories once again to his declining career.
Khan was once being considered among the best light welterweight fighters in the world. He lost to Lamont Peterson last year in a controversial manner and so the defeat did not affect his career much. However, his recent defeat to unbeaten American fighter
Danny Garcia was devastating. A fourth round knockout for an elite fighter is something to be worried about.
Now, Khan is hopeful that Hunter would revamp his boxing style. Khan believes he is an offensive fighter and he wants Hunter to work on his defence, to ensure he never suffers another knockout.
For now, Khan believes his fight against Molina is a career breaking and making one. According to the Olympian, he desperately needs to a victory to lift up his brand once again. He knows how much damage Garcia has caused him and now he is trying his level
best to make sure it does not happen again.
