Amir Khan to join Joe Gallagher’s gym to train – Boxing news
Former IBF/WBA light-welterweight champion Amir Khan has turned to Joe Gallagher’s gym to train for his rematch against Lamont Peterson.
Khan usually takes training from Freddie Roach but this time Khan has added Joe Gallagher’s gym to his list as well. Khan will move to the Philippines to catch up with his mentor Freddie after taking the initial training from Joe.
Amir Khan revealed finalisation of his rematch last week. The rematch with Peterson will take place on May 19 in Las Vegas. Khan was the unified IBF/WBA light-welterweight champion until he lost his titles to Peterson.
Since then, he has been waiting for the opportunity to claim back what he thinks rightfully belongs to him.
Khan’s gym has been a paradise for Joe for the last couple of years since the latter has used it to train fighters. Some prominent fighters who have taken training under Joe are Scott Quigg and Anthony Crolla.
Khan had two options. He could have either gone to USA to train since Freddie is there these days or go to Joe.
Khan’s business manager Asif Valli revealed, “It looks like he is going to go straight to the Philippines, rather than have a short camp in the USA, he will start his initial training camp with Joe Gallagher.”
Freddie Roach is currently booked to train the Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao for his upcoming bout. Therefore, Khan has to go to the UK first to start his preparations and then visit Freddie Roach when he is finally done with Manny.
Asif further revealed, “It’s the first time he’s starting in the UK but the dates don’t work and Manny is the first in Freddie Roach’s contract.”
He also said that Amir is well aware of Joe’s capabilities and that the former knows well what to expect from him, adding that Khan has been out of boxing for the last 4 months and that he needs to start early to pick up the pace.
Khan will face Lamont Peterson in Las Vegas, where none of the fighters will have the home crowd advantage. It is a neutral venue and so both the fighters are putting in their best to win the show.
