Amir Khan vs. Danny Garcia: Fight of the decade, who will win? - Boxing Special
Amir Khan and Danny Garcia both are respectable names in the light welterweight division. Although both the fighters are more or less of the same caliber, Khan is being favoured by most analysts over Garcia, and the latter is being deemed as the underdog
for the showdown.
The question is does Khan, the former WBA Super world and IBF light welterweight champion, has the tendency to nail the lad who has built himself quite a reputation for being a powerful pounder? No one knows what will happen on July 14, but to make a prediction
it is best to analyse the duo’s previous bouts.
Amir Khan, 25, hailing from Bolton currently holds ESPN’s third divisional rank just after Timothy Bradley and Lamont Peterson. Khan in his career has taken on many big names, emphatically nailing them in a commanding manner.
The only issue with Khan is his fighting style. It has been a matter of concern for most analysts right from the beginning. The Bolton fighter is used to of connecting a jab and then immediately moving back, something that can back fire when he faces Garcia.
Nevertheless, Khan is the more experienced one. A look at the pugilists, who have lost to Khan, shows that the brawlers were not simple outdated belligerents. All those sluggers were respectable names who possessed hefty and quite intimidating portfolios.
Khan nailed Malignaggi via 11th round knockout in his career’s 24th bout. Paul Malignaggi, the former IBF light welterweight champion, was well known for being a resilient pugilist with the ability to absorb severe punishment. It must also be noted that
Paul in his May 2010 Khan-clash was in his 31st bout and therefore had the experience advantage.
Despite having odds severely against him, Khan rose at the occasion, quite frankly in an authoritative manner. In addition to the aforementioned facts, Khan has the height and therefore the reach advantage as well, which if capitalised will certainly aid
him in grabbing a career boosting win.
On the other side of the corner, we have Danny Garcia. The 24-year-old Philadelphia proud will enter his career’s 24th bout with an undefeated streak. The young lad has pinned 14 of his opponents by knockout as compared to Khan’s 18.
A brief look at Danny’s resume shows that he has also fought men with great stature and name in the division. Most naysayers are of the view that since Danny is coming off a win over an old man, Erik Morales, he does not have the ability to nail Khan.
Danny held himself back, halting and waiting for Erik to move in. It is this reason, why Erik was able to win the initial rounds and created problems for the ‘Swift’. Furthermore, Danny needs to use his muscular body in an appropriate rather opportune manner.
He does have the height disadvantage but at the same time, this facet will enable him to charge Khan via inside out attack, unanimously considered a lethal one. While keeping in mind the above facts, the odds are 50-50 on both sides and only the man with
the best and unique strategy will win the bout.
