Amir Khan vs. Danny Garcia: WBA title finally on the line – Boxing News
CEO of Golden Boy Promotions Richard Schaefer has confirmed that the WBA 140-pound title will be on the line when Khan takes on Garcia.
The title, which is now vacant, was held by Lamont Peterson. After falling victim to a drug test conducted earlier this year in April, Lamont Peterson was stripped off the title. The World Boxing Association revealed the news of clearing Peterson as the WBA champion yesterday.
Considering it the opportune moment, Richard Schaefer wrote to the WBA, requesting to put the vacant title up for grabs for Khan’s fight against Garcia. Earlier today, Schaefer revealed that the WBA has indeed agreed to do so.
"I've gotten verbal confirmation that the WBA is going to have Amir fight for the WBA title, so that's that. As it relates to the WBC, we already know that the fight is also going to be for the WBC title [owned by Garcia,] so their fight will definitely be for two belts," revealed Schaefer.
It should be noted here that Peterson grabbed the IBF and WBA unified titles from Khan in December last year. Peterson no longer holds the WBA title but he retains the IBF belt. The IBF has to yet review the fight between Khan and Peterson, and decide Peterson’s fate after listening to comments and suggestions from both the sides.
For now, former IBF and WBA super lightweight champion Amir Khan wants to prove his mettle against Danny Garcia. Richard Schaefer has already promised Khan a match against WBC welterweight titlist Floyd Mayweather jr., only if Khan is able to defeat Garcia.
Stakes are high for Khan and he has to emerge victorious against Garcia to once again establish his brand. After his controversial loss to Peterson, Khan has faced quite a lot of negativity from the boxing universe. Therefore, his fight against Garcia is his testing point – he can either fly sky high or plummet like a dead star.
Amir Khan fights Danny Garcia on the 14th of July in Las Vegas. To get a chance of winning tickets to see the fight live, go to http://contest.wishfree.com/amirkhan/.
