Amir Khan vs. Danny Garcia: Will the Bolton fighter rise or plummet? – Boxing Special
Bolton fighter Amir Khan has gone through several vicissitudes in his career but this time the stakes are too high. He is currently scheduled to fight Danny Garcia on July 14. A win means he will reclaim the WBA super lightweight title and Garcia’s WBC light
welterweight title, whereas a loss would deem him as a failure forever.
After losing his unified titles to Lamont Peterson last year in December, Khan has been the centre of attention of some of the most top-notch publications and boxing websites. The pugilist has been making headlines, showing his aggression towards Peterson,
who tested positive for having steroids in his blood in April.
Khan was just 20 days away from a grudge rematch against Peterson, just when he heard news of the match facing annulment. As much as the Bolton fighter was excited about the showdown, he had to face the reality which was that he would have to settle down
for another instead of Peterson. In other words, Khan’s chance of reclaiming his titles and reviving his brand was lost.
Khan had prepared hard for the fight. He spent four weeks at the Baguio City training camp with former WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao and trainer Freddie Roach to prepare for the fight. The news hit the Bolton power machine hard. He evinced his
anger and disappointment through several interviews, calling Peterson a cheat and a liar.
Later on, news emerged that Khan has settled down to fight American unbeaten fighter Danny Garcia on July 14. Initially, the fight was for Garcia’s WBC title but now the WBA lightweight title will be on the line too, since the WBA has stripped Peterson off
the title.
Khan is already aware of Garcia’s potential and therefore he knows what to expect. “We expect another tough fight, I've had some great wins in Las Vegas, beaten Maidana, beaten Zab Judah for ibf, so make this the third one against Danny Garcia. Danny Garcia
brings a lot to the table really, he unbeaten, he has the WBC title, and I think when a fighters unbeaten he has a lot of confidence, and I'm sure he does not want to taste to defeat, so at the end of the day we are going to train hard, cause I have tasted
defeat before and I don't want to taste defeat again,” Khan iterated earlier this month.
For now, Garcia is Khan’s ultimate career test. Khan has previously faced fighters of the same potential but he was not under the same pressure he is right now. He knows well that this bout will determine his future. A win can get him both the titles and
a fight against Floyd Mayweather jr., as promised by CEO of Golden Boy Promotions Richard Schaefer. However, a loss can take him down for good.
For fans and analysts alike, Khan’s July 14 showdown will be an epic event, determining the Bolton fighter’s career path. Amir Khan fights Danny Garcia on the 14th of July in Las Vegas. To get a chance of winning tickets to see the fight live, go to
