Amir Khan wins ‘British Boxer of the Year 2010’ award
World Boxing Association’s junior welterweight title-holder Amir Khan has won the 'British Boxer of the Year 2010' award.
The award was announced by the highly-recognised weekly publication, Boxing News, which is the world’s oldest boxing magazine as it was established to promote Boxing around the globe in 1909.
According to the magazine’s ranking, super middleweight star Carl Froch, commonly known as “The Cobra”, got the second position while heavyweight star boxer David Haye was declared as the third boxer of 2010.
24-year-old Amir Khan defended his WBA light-welterweight title two times in 2010. Winning against Marcos Maidana in December was one of his best fights of the year. This courageous victory over Marcos Maidana was undefeated in 2010.
Moreover, voting made it difficult to choose one between Amir Khan and Carl Froch. They were in competition in the race of becoming most favourite British boxer of 2010. Carl Froch was the British Boxer of 2009. The decision was taken primarily depending
upon the number of votes earned by each fighter from world boxing fans.
Finally the vote count named Khan as a next growing British star of 2010.  The Pakistan-born British boxer now can be seen in the youngest winners of the prestigious award.
Talking to the Sports Encounter, a leading web news agency, Mr Muhammad Akram, Secretary General of Pakistan Boxing Federation, called it a huge achievement for the young boxer.
Akram said, “Pakistan has got talent and been producing some of the best boxers over the years. Amir Khan is a fabulous boxer and brought laurels to his country by out punching Marcos Maidana in Las Vegas last year.”
He also said that Pakistan had the potential to produce world class boxers. He added that if the Pakistani players were provided with modern boxing facilities, the world will see many new names from Pakistan.
Mr Akram said, "I am very happy and I congratulate Khan for his admiral effort. I believe he has got what the international professional boxing requires and he has proved that he is not for awards but the awards are for him.”
2010 has been the best year for Amir Khan as he clearly outwitted and defeated former world champion Paulie Malignaggi at Madison Square Garden in New York. Afterwards, his victory over Marcos Maidana in December was also remarkable.
Excitedly speaking to the British media, Khan said, “I’m delighted with the award. Big thanks to Boxing News. I want to dedicate this award to my family and my fans for believing in me. I’d also like to say a big thank you to all my fans, who followed me
to New York and Las Vegas.”
British Boxing is now trying to touch the sky. It is growing day by day and producing back to back world champions such as David Haye, Carl Froch, Amir Khan and Ricky Burns as well as an interim beltholder Nathan Cleverly, six European champions and many
other highly-recognised contenders.
The WBA light-welterweight champion believes the 2011 would be more fruitful as for as his professional boxing career was concerned and he would continue fighting for Briton by winning such inspiring titles as his life target.
