Amir Khan’s picture evidence must support him in his legal struggle for a rematch with Peterson
Amir Khan, the British boxer of Pakistani descent, has come up with new evidence, which includes pictures of a suspicious and unidentified man interfering with the supervisor, in a bid to make his case stronger against the controversial split decision that
saw him lose the fight against American boxer, Lamont Peterson.
The fresh evidence can make a powerful impact on the outcome of the pending decision over the match. The rematch is a must, and this evidence may pave the way for it.
It was a nasty blow to the former unified WBA (World Boxing Association) and IBA (International Boxing Association) light welterweight champion.
As it turned out, the referee’s controversial split decision declared Peterson as the winner of the night.
Much to the chagrin of Khan, who lost 14 crucial points for pushing his opponent, he appealed against the decision and requested Peterson a rematch which the latter accepted.
The IBF & WBA accepted Amir’s appeal and started an investigation into the controversial match result.
“We have filed an official appeal which will trigger a thorough investigation from the IBF and WBA," said Schaefer, the chief executive of the company Golden Boys that promotes Amir.”
"I've been given an update by the IBF and WBA. They both want the appeal in New York on 18 and 19 January. They will make their decision on whether the outcome should be overturned, should stand or if there needs to be a rematch. There is clear outrage against
the officiating and something needs to be done."
Amir Khan is also said to be boosted and hopeful following this development but the question remains whether the outcome of the investigation will favour Amir or endorse Peterson’s victory.
Whatever the outcome of the investigation may be, the rematch is the most suitable option for both the boxers.
It will be a major morale booster for Amir, giving him an opportunity to knock his hardened opponent and redeem his earlier loss.
Only through a rematch will he have a chance of proving his mettle and disproving the referee’s allegedly biased decision.
Secondly, the rematch option will be good for Peterson as well.
He has already accepted the challenge and was right in saying during the post-match conference that his job is only to fight his best and not to decide the outcome.
Whether Peterson agrees or not, the fight with Khan brought home a controversial victory for him.
The rematch will also allow Peterson to claim a clean victory without an iota of controversy. As a matter of fact, boxing should stay clear of controversies as much as it can.
The interesting fact about the controversial fight was that Amir had his points deducted for pushing his opponent but Peterson got away with moving his head low towards Khan. The referee failed to take note of him, wittingly or unwittingly.
Khan has his own legitimate reasons to be overly critical of the referee and the result.
According to him, if he was moving in low with his head, he would have faced disqualification. His grievances clearly imply that he found the referee extremely biased in the ring.
There is still a month or two to go before WBA and IBF decides Khan's fate. The controversial decision should be overturned. Both the boxers must prepare for the rematch.
It will be good for the sport and both the boxers will have a clear opportunity to prove their dominance over each other. Without a doubt, the rematch will be worth a watch. It is up to the jury to decide what impact the new evidence makes on this case.
