Amir will be exonerated next month – Shahid Karim
Amir’s lawyer, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Shahid-c89347 Karim said on Thursday that the decision of ICC’s anti-corruption tribunal to defer its verdict over spot-fixing case has given his client renewed hope of making a comeback soon.
Karim, who was talking to the media reporters at the Allama Iqbal International on his return home after attending six-day hearing at Doha, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Qatar-c2986, was confident that his 18-year-old client would get a clean-chit once the three-member tribunal
delivers its decision on February 5th, 2011.
"The last day of the (six-day) hearing was very positive," said Karim. "It could be a silver lining for us," the optimistic lawyer added.
If the three-member ICC tribunal, headed by British lawyer Michael Beloff, decides to uphold the ICC’s decision, the players will still have the right to challenge the verdict at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). However, Karim was
positive that the option would not be used as Amir would be exonerated next month.
"I haven't yet thought about that. I hope he (Amir) will be exonerated next month when the verdict will be announced," he said.
The Beloff-led panel postponed its decision until 5th of next month after an exhaustive six-day long hearing. Since it is a high-profile case in the history of international cricket and will have great impact on the game’s future,
the panel decided to deliberate after continuous six days of hearing.
Amir’s lawyer requested the tribunal to defer its decision soon after the conclusion of hearings on Tuesday, January 11th 2011.
Three http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 players, former captain Salman Butt and the pair of pacers Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif, were suspended by the International Cricket Council in September last year after a British tabloid named “News of the World” alleged
that the trio was bribed for bowling pre-planned no-balls in Lord’s Test against England.
The spot-fixing case against the three players has been ascribed as the biggest in the international cricket over the past decade. The case levelled against the players can put a full stop to their cricketing career, if proven guilty.
Besides Lord’s Test, the three players’ performance in the Oval Test was also under ICC’s scrutiny. Karim told the media reporters that his client has been cleared by the tribunal from the charges regarding Oval game and only the decision
on Lord’s Test is pending.
