Question:

Amitriptyline for a concussion?

I received a concussion during football practice 9 days ago. It is my 2nd one in a year and both were grade 2's. The doctor that I saw this time (I saw a neurologist to make sure I could play again) and he gave me metropolitan for it and after the research I have done, I found out that it is used as an anti depressant and is also for migraines.

I do not have a migraine, or a headache. I have a concussion and the symptoms include headache, dizziness and occasional blurred vision. I told the doctor these symptoms and I am looking at the side effects and noticed that dizziness and blurred vision are common side effects. Also, a concussion is not a headache or a migraine. They are 2 completely different things...

Now should I continue taking this? or should I talk to the doctor on monday? What should I do?

  1. It sounds like you didn't get complete answers from your doctor. Ask again.

But, you are also saying that you had a headache (but that you don't have a headache) and dizziness and blurred vision from the concussion before you were taking the drug. You then note that dizziness and blurred vision are known side effects of the drug and seem to want to blame side-effects and not the original concussion.

There are plenty of uses for amitriptyline other than for depression or migraines including neurological pain and your neurologist may know other uses for it also.

But again, call your doctor and ask "why amitriptyline?" and "am I seeing drug side effects or the effects of the concussion?". You should call your doctor's after hours line and not wait until Monday; that's what they get paid for. If you've been taking the drug for a few days, stopping without talking to your doctor first could hurt more likely than help.

  2. ok

  3. sir its sounds like u got knocked retarded i can barely even read what u write

  4. i'm on amitriptyline for nerve pain/migraines in the left eye area.  it is an anti-depressant but also used for pain and headaches.  most drug list all of the above as potential side effects.  i'm not familiar with concussions and amitriptyline.  I would call your doctor as soon as you can.  if you think the drug is causing the side effects, i would stop taking it.  i am not a doctor but i don't think a concussion would cause those symtoms nine days later unless there was some other injury to the brian.  have you had a ct scan or mri?
