total R will be 0.5 ohms, but you need the added resistor a little larger so the total will be 0.5.

R = 0.5*5/(5-0.5) = 0.555 ohms

It should be in series with the resistor, and the resistor should be of as high a value as possible, this will make the ammeters resistance negligible and therefore you will get a more accurate reading.
