Question:

Ammo for SKS question?

A few days ago I was talking to one of my friends who owned a SKS and I was asking what caliber it shot since I know near nothing about SKS's and he was saying that it fired a 30-06, now I looked at some SKS's online and looked into it and learned that most "if not all" fire the 7.62x39mm caliber round. So I'm wondering did they ever make a 30-06 SKS or did he just simply say the wrong caliber.

  1. They Sure dont come in 30-06. The 30-06 has Much more power than what the SKS is chambered for, which is 7.62X39mm. I suppose you could try to rebore the thing, but thats VERY unsafe to do, And I dont think most gunsmiths would do it, truthfully. I say Call BS.

  2. They never made an SKS that shot a 30-06.... Only 7.62X39MM....   I should point out the actual bullet in both cartridges are generaly .30 caliber but the case size is quite different between the 2......

  3. it does indeed fire the 7.62 x39mm caliber, either he really shouldn't be using this rifle( if he tries a .30-06 it will not work and will not even fit in the chamber) or was kidding with you.

  4. sks ammo is about half as big as a 30-06. Theres never been  a 30-06  sks.

  5. It takes a 7.62x39.  This is considered a ".30 caliber" round, but it doesn't even have the same .308 bore as the 30-06 (or the 308).  The bullet diameter is bigger, but the case is shorter.  Thankfully for your "friend", the action of an SKS SHOULDN'T even close completely on a 30-06 round, so you should have to really work at blowing yourself up.

  6. Perhaps he was 'dumbing down' his answer.  They both fire a similarly sized projectile.  I am not aware of any SKS that will fire .30-06, but I would be willing to bet someone has modified one, or made one from scratch.

  7. NEVR, NEVER trust that "friend" with a firearm!!!

The SKS is chambered for the 7.62x39 and I have never seen one in any other caliber.
