Ammonia Odor from carpet, help!?

Some bathroom cleaner was spilled into the carpet a week ago. My kids had spilled water into the place where the cleaner had spilled. Now there's an odor smelling very badly coming from the carpet. I want to replace the carpet in that spot, but I don't know how. Can someone please help? Thanks!

Have you tried washing the carpet or just rinsing with clear water?  Some bathroom carpets can be just picked up and washed. Does it still smell when it is dry?  There are cleaners out designed for cleaning pet odors,(which smell like ammonia)
