I am going to Europe for about 20days. I am staying in hostels the whole time. Not including the airfare what about would you teak with you. I'm going from Ireland - Scottland - London - Amsterdam - Brussels - Ireland. What would you suggest I'm thinking about $2000. Also I don't tend to spend much on food and I'm not planning on buying any souvenirs.

  1. Most of the places you plan to visit are gaspingly expensive, even if you stay in hostels and watch your costs. Try to have 100 Euros per day available - more like $3000.

Consider joining SERVAS, which is a global network of travelers and hosts who have passed a background check. It will also save on costs. You will have local contacts in all the places you plan to visit even if you don't choose to stay with a host:  www.servas.org

Hope you have a great trip!

  2. definitely don't bring all of your spending money with you! It would be horrible if you lost all of your savings! I just got back from Europe a month ago and was travelled on a very tight budget.

    30 euros a night for a hostel

10 euros a day for food(this is a small budget, but workable if you don't mind cooking your own meals and buying from grocery stores instead of restaurants)

10 euros a day for travel

20 euros a day for entertainment

If you are willing to spend a bit more, then just modify the prices.  Beware that england is expensive and i am sure that you will have unexpected expenses as well. $2000 is probably a good budget, but make sure you have a bit more in the bank just in case you need it.  Bring a visa too for emergencies.

I think you should bring about $300 to start out with.  That should cover your first few days of travel.  When you run out of that, take out another 300 or so from a debit machine. just check with your bank to make sure your debit card is compatible overseas.

    Just have fun!!

  3. I only bring about 100 Euros for the first few days' expenses (food, cab, etc.).  Then I use the ATM to get cash as needed.
