May have an out of state job and trying to guess on the proposed start date I should give in an interview. Are moving companies usually booked pretty far in advance or is scheduling fairly straightforward?

  1. I would ask the new employer if they can recommend any removalists, for certain roles some large companies have relocation programmes for new starters, that include a rebate (eg; $2,500) and arranging vans.

    If they can't help you I recommend you use online 'Yellow Pages' or google websites, then start by selecting 2-3 removal companies to telephone that are in the new town/city you are moving too. For many reasons eg; may be cheaper, their 'return to base' will be easier to track/control, if anything goes wrong they are in the new town so easier to deal with.

    Simply ask for the following;

    1. Advanced  notice they need to book you in for move (usually 2-4wks)

    2. Can they arrive at your apartment at eg; 9am, 10am, what day?

    3. What is the charge for moving? How long do they think it will take? You will need to make sure you check the mileage also.

    4.Advise them of any unusual and/or large items you need moving, and ask if this is acceptable with them (standard - fridge, washer, beds, cupboards).

    5. Do you need boxes? Ask if they provide any free boxes? Though recommend as always, you pack yourself in advance and NUMBER all boxes, to help the audit check at the destination end.

    6. After you book them in, don't forget to book in a cleaner & Carpet steam cleaning service for your apartment same day.

    Hope this helps some.... Most good removalists have websites that have excellent 'To Do' checklists for you to use.
