Amour Propre ends his 2 year winless streak after landing the Flying Five Stakes at the Curragh
It was an easy day out for the British-trained sprinters as they kept a firm hold of the Irish meet, and it got better when the 5-year-old chestnut gelding, Amour Propre, spurted past his opponents in style to win the Group 3 Market Slide Flying Five Stakes
at Curragh on 28 August, 2011.
It was a 5 furlong test on a ground labelled as good, and Amour Propre went on to register his first win since 2 May, 2009.
The win back in 2009 also came in a Group 3 race in the Palace House Stakes at Newmarket over a distance of 5 furlong on a good to firm ground.
That day the son of Paris House defeated a field of 15 sprinters under jockey Dane O’Neill for trainer Henry Candy.
The gelding, at that time 3 years old, was sent at 7 to 1 to win the race, as he started off tracking leaders until he came under a strong drive from jockey, Dane O’Neill, to lead the pack over a furlong to go.
The pair stayed firm and ran on strongly, not giving a pocket of space to anyone close, as they drew clear inside the final furlong, impressively defeating their rival, Hoh Hoh Hoh, by 2 ½ lengths.
In the Five Flying Stakes, Amour Propre was challenged by Sole Power as they turned for home. Sole Power was the prominent of them all and started from the side of the rail.
Clearly went all out and after not long disputed for the lead halfway, headed well over 1 furlong out, but at the same time Amour Propre disputed for the lead as well, staying strong to lead the race, 1 furlong out.
Despite Sole Power’s efforts, under jockey K Latham, the pair made no impression on Amour Propre and kept on same pace as the winner kept on well inside the final furlong to defeat Sole Power by 1 ¾ lengths.
Brendan W Duke’s trained Roicead, Move In Time and Invincible Ash rolled in to finish 3rd, 4th and 5th, respectively.
