Question:

Amoxicillin and boils?

I'm in Costa Rica right now and I developed a boil on my right arm. I just had one on my right leg in December so I'm a little worried. It hurt so much but it is starting to go away. I squeezed most of the pus out but I've been looking around the internet and most are saying that it is a bad thing. I've been taking amoxicillin since Monday night every 8 hours, but I don't know how long I should take it for since the infection could come back if I stop too early. (They sell normally prescribed drugs over the counter so I had to make my own diagnosis....) How long should I take the medicine for?

I will go to my doctor immediately once I get back to California but for now I am stuck here.... tropical storm. What luck...

  1. The treatment is drainage. Fortunately, antibiotics are not usually required. I say fortunately, because the organism in boils is routinely Staph. aureus, and amoxicillin won't touch it. You can quit the amoxicillin now. If it turns out that you do need antibiotics, it's anybody's guess these days what to choose. In my community a small majority of the Staph. our lab grows is resistant to methicillin, cephalexin, and the other drugs we used to rely on. Here it's generally sensitive to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxasole, but fifty miles away that isn't the case.

  2. dear friend

take amoxicillin+clauvalanic acid combination for 5 days

it shows good results especially in boils

    avoid squeezing out pus

    maintain aseptic conditions

clean the part with betadine ointment or any other antiseptic lotion ant put a clean sterile gauze

    you will be allright

    take care

  3. Its a staph infection.  As long as its not mrsa, you are fine.  Keep a bandaid over it with some neosporin

  4. Sounds like you are having a reaction to the penicillin product. I would go back to where you got the amoxicillin and ask for a different prescription that is not a penicillin. Depending on what you are taking it for, you may want to try another type of antibiotic such as Zithromax (if for a cold). I would not continue to take the medicine if you are having an allergic reaction.

  5. amox is generally not indicated for staph or MRSA.  see your doctor.
