Amoxil on Kitten is making me nervous?

My 7 week old kitten is on .5 of Amoxil 2x a day for an internal infection. He has been acting drunk and crazy since he has been on it for 3 days. He threw up his dose last night and started acting fine. When I give him this medicine he wont do anything but sleep and sit there.

Should I lower the dose?

  1. Amoxil is in the penicillin group of antibiotics and it is possible for him to be having an allergic reaction to it.

If he were mine, I would skip his next dose and call his vet first thing Monday morning.  Don't just quite the Amoxil and don't change the dose..that sounds correct for a kitten.

I also read your other question to see if I could get some history on why he was on Amoxil.  I have had many kitties and kittens with upper respiratory infections and they never had nose bleeds.  But the high fever and high white blood count do point to an infection. Is kitten's nose still bloody?

Is he eating and drinking for you?  If he has been on the antibiotics for three days this should have brought his fever down and he would want to eat again.

    Purrs to you and kitten.

  2. Just call the vet and tell them exactly what you told us here. Let the vet decide if a lower dose is in order, or perhaps a change of medication entirely. Perhaps he is allergic or other reasons you don't know about. Lowering the dose would mean it wouldn't do what it is supposed to do, so there's really no point anyway.

    Good luck.

  3. I think you should ask the vet that prescribed it.

  4. That is 100% a question for the vet. Why don't you call them, they'll probably give you advice over the phone and save you the trip in.
