Question:

Amp Question - did it blow my alternator?

Hi

I have a MTX 801D 800Watts amp that I think blew my amp.

I have a couple questions.

1. When I hook up the amp to the battery it sparks...is this normal?

2. I usually had my subwoofer out and the amp remote wire was disconnected but otherwise it was connected to power...is this okay or should I have also taken out the positive/neg cables from the amp?

3. I did not tune anything, the line level converter was on full and the controls on the amp were turned up for max bass (not professionally).

4. The sub is a Rockford Fosgate P3 dual voice coil. On 2ohms the amp gives out 800 watts which is how i hooked it up to the sub.

5. No cap was hooked up. My car is a 2001 Nissan Maxima

Are these the reasons that my alternator went out? What should I do now that I want to hook it back up.

Thanks a lot for your input in advance!

  1. 1. Yes, it is discharging.

    2. ?  I don't know what way you wired it based on your explaination.

You need the power wire from amp to inline fuse to battery.

You neeed the ground wire from amp to metal piece. (sand any paint that is inbetween the two metal peices.)

You need remote wire hook to remote wire on back of head unit.

    Thats all for power connections.

You need speaker wire from amp to subs.

    3. You need to have it tuned professionally if you can not do so yourself.  Putting everything to the max puts you in danger of clipping.  Damages your equipment.

    4. I need to know the size of the sub as well at the RMS rating.

Alternator went out?  Or do you mean your amplifier?

Check your inline fuse, check the fuses on the side of the amp, check power wire connection, ground wire connection, speak wire connection.

If you checked everything above, and nothing is loose or blown, take a voltage meter and check the +/- of your amp.  See if any power is going to your amp.  If so, then you blew your amp.  Which is why it is not turning on.
