Amp Shutdown?

after furthering my inspection on my car i found that when the ground touches metal the amp shorts itself out and the red light turns off but if the ground is off metal the red light turns on and the amp will work....im no car expert so if i could have some feedback on options that would be appreciated

  1. seems odd it would shut off when its grounded. It may be a poor ground when you connect it. is your ground bare metal, or painted, if so scrap off the paint. try not to play your sub because if your amp isnt finding ground through your ground wire it could be finding ground through your RCA'S which is BAD and could fry you headunit. also what gauge wire are you using and what is recommended for your amp?


  2. don't get the question, is the amp shutting off when you ground it (touching metal)? or is the amp working when its not grounded (not touching metal, does not seem possible)?

    the red protection light should come on when it has a bad ground and it should not work

    another reason that your amp may not be working correctly is the impedance (ohms). see if you have the correct impedance (check your sub wiring, and see if your amp is stable at the impedance you are wired for), here's a link to help you http://www.the12volt.com/caraudio/woofer...
