Amp turns off speakers but not sub when turned up loud

Question

i was listening to music when the amp overheated and switched off, this has happened before, so i let it cool down then switched it back on, when i go to turn it up the amp switches off the speakers but leaves the sub on?

well maybe you are overpowering the speakers and they cut off. probably not, but i would guess that something is hooked up improperly. My amp did the same thing, the subs kept hittin in the song but the speakers cut off. The speakers can't be on the same amp as a subwoofer, because what one single speaker takes at 4 ohms on 1 channel, the other speakers can't be handled at 2 ohms or less. It's bad for the amp because it can't really run two kinds of ohms at the same time.

Ignore everything that Big Tim has said, that guy really needs to learn what he is talking about since he has no clue what so ever. There is no way that your system is going to drain your battery when your car is off, unless you have wired the amps remote wrong.

You need to have a different amp for your other speakers inside the car, the only way that you can get away with using 1 amp for everything is to buy a 5 channel amp. It will have 4 channels for your speakers and 1 dedicated channel for your sub. The single channel is meant for the sub and only the sub. either buy a 5 channel amp or buy a 4 channel amp for the speakers.

If you are powering a descent amp with a factory battery, you will drain the battery regardless if the car is on or not. It sounds like your battery is low and does not have enough energy to power your amp. Just because the light is on doesn't necessarily mean power is running through it. There is probably just enough energy to power the amp light. Everytime you are letting it cool your battery is charging. Most factory alternators cannot recharge the power in your battery as fast as your amp drains it.
