Question:

Amp will not play s-video input?

I am trying to connect my laptop to my Yamaha V793 amplifier through the s-video input. I've connected the same laptop and cable to a tv and it works fine. When I put the cord into either of the inputs on the amp, no signal goes to the tv.

  1. If you are looking for the receiver to downgrade the s-video signal to composite it most likely can not do it. ( This functionality is not needed much).

You would need to run the s-video cable directly to the TV, or get an external converter, or run a patch s-video from the receiver to the TV.

    EDIT:

True but you are asking the receiver to re-integrate the Y/C signal over to composite. Most receivers do not incorporate this since most source devices would have a lower grade output as mandated by the FCC. Since a computer does not fall under the connectivity requirements for a NTSC or ATSC tuner this issue comes up. Also for each video signal you would add $10 approx to the cost for circuity, that frankly most people would not use. Additionally the radiated emissions from the receiver would be readily increased since you would need impedance matching circuity for each input.

If you look in the owners manual for your receiver it will address this issue with a note that you must connect a corresponding output cable for each type of input.

  2. With that generation receiver, you need to run SVideo from the receiver to the TV to see anything feeding SVideo.

    The rule is:

Composite in - is seen from the composite out cable

SVideo in - is seen from the SVideo out cable

  3. Because S-Video is just that. Video. It does not carry an audio signal, only luminance+sync and crominance plus 2 grounds. (4 pins ?)

For audio, you will need 3.5mm stereo jack on the other end of 2 phono (rca?) jacks.
