what happens if i connect a 10 awg ga amp wire to an amp thats gonna be putting 0ut 1700w at 2 ohms? im confused cause everyone says to use a 0 ga wire for it but my friend has the same amp a boss 3000w mono ( i know the amp will not push out 3000w ) and has it connected with 10awg wire , he has not had problems, i also looked into it and it said that a 4 ga wire can handle bout 2500 w, but can someone explain how fat the 4 ga wire is, or what wire is best and safe, thanks

  1. If your putting out 1700w you will want to go with the 0 gauge. 10 gauge is way to small. I use 10 gauge on my door speakers. 4 gauge is about the size of your pinky 0 is your thumb. Can't believe your friend is running a 3000w boss on 10 gauge.

  2. you can look at the size of the fuses in the amp to figure out the "real" RMS wattage (peak and/or max wattage means nothing) and then you can use this chart http://www.crutchfield.com/learn/learnin... to find the correct size

i would guess that a "3000watt BOSS amp" puts out about 400watts RMS (if you are lucky and it would more than likely be distorted, the main cause of speaker damage)

i always recommend at least 4gauge so that if and/or when you are ready to upgrade you don't have to remove the old wires and buy the thicker stuff, its more time and cost effective
