Question:

Amplifiers and splitters?

Is it possible to use a cable splitter followed by an amplifier followed by a splitter followed by an amplifier over and over (to a reasonable amount...like 5 or 6 splitters) and not have any, or at least very little, signal degradation? or is there something more to the signal loss of a splitter that an amplifier can't fix?

  1. The fatal flaw of this scheme is noise. Whenever you amplify a signal, you also amplify the noise. Splitters decrease the signal, but *may* introduce additional noise if the connections aren't perfect.. Video quality is closely related to the signal to noise ratio.

  2. Your best bet is to use splitters and amps only when necessary and use as few devices as possible to get the job done.  I work in a hospital that has many TV's throughout.  The cable signal has to be split and amplified MANY times.  We do get a good signal everywhere, but you do need to know what you are doing.
