How do I match an amp with a subwoofer that I want

  1. find out how many RMS watts you need to power each voice coil of the sub,  then find an amp with a similar amount of RMS watts as the combined RMS of all voice coils in the sub.  NEVER go by "peak" or "max"  watts for either  because those measurements can be inaccurate and will not give you a consistent or meaningful insight into the power of your amp or the limits of your sub.

    Also, don't listen to anybody that says you can damage a sub or speakers by under powering it, because they have no idea what they are talking about.  (the amount of watts going from the amp to sub is controlled by your volume, so on low volume you will ALWAYS be "under powering" your system.  If your amp is not powerful enough to handle the sub, the amplifier may be damaged before the sub at very high volumes (un-listenable levels).   If you amp has TOO MUCH power for your sub/speakers, they can also be damaged at very high volume levels.
