Amr Ramsy Swelim stuns Gonzalo Miranda in the quarterfinal – Saskatoon Boast Open 2011
In the biggest upset of the day 27 year-old Italian Amr Ramsy Swelim ousted the second seeded Argentinean Gonzalo Miranda during the quarterfinal of the Saskatoon Boast Open 2011. It took Swelim just 33 minutes to whip the second seeded Argentinean in straight three sets of 11-9, 11-8, and 11-5.
The first round of the match was commenced by Miranda as he had won the service toss and he actually got off to a good start as he held his service game for a few rallies. Though he took the lead initially but he then stumbled in the middle and was unable to regain control. On the other hand, Swelim took hold of the opportunity and availed it to his benefit as he bagged a few rally points and served with not just sheer power but technique. He ultimately clogged the opening game to go one up in the match.
The toe-to-toe run between the two was again initiated in the second set and this time Miranda once more put in his best performance but his opponent was a stronger competition. Miranda was unable to hold his nerves and made a few errors by throwing the ball out. Moreover, he was unable to get a geometric precision and kept hitting the ball below the service line which cost him most of his points.
However, Swelim fought back and was very comfortable with matching an eye for an eye against his opponent. It was towards the end of the second set that the Italian rushed past his adversary towards the finish line. As he smashed a few rail shots, he left his opponent flabbergasted and clogged the second set as well.
Neither of the players was ready throw in the towel and the two were extremely competitive and bagged five points each. The cat and mouse chase only survived for the first five points of the game as from there onwards the unseeded Italian took on an advance form of playing. He thrashed his adversary and clinched the third set with a 11-5 score.
In doing so; the unseeded Italian qualified into the semi final where he will be facing Canadian Dane Sharp.
