Amsterdam Marathon witnesses a new course record
With Ethiopian runner Getu Feleke making it to the finishing line in just 2 hours, 5 minutes and 44 seconds, the course of Amsterdam Marathon observed a fantastic record during the race held on Sunday October 17. Debutant Wilson Chebet ended second with
another impressive time limit of 2 hours, 6 minutes and 12 seconds.
In women’s race, it was Alice Timbili who, after making to the finishing line in just 2 hours 25 minutes and 3 seconds named the title. Other prominent performances were depicted by Ronald Schro, the Dutchman finishing the distance in 2 hours, 16 minutes
and 56 seconds and of Miranda Boonstra the first Dutch woman to make it in 2 hours, 34 minutes and 24 seconds. Moreover, an interesting fact about the Amsterdam Marathon of this year was revealed when it was told that this time it enjoyed maximum number of
entries ever. There had been 31,463 entries from the participants to be a part of the Le Champion event.
This time the organizers at Amsterdam Marathon decided to add up charm to the race as they not only changed the course, they also made efforts to bring improvement in the overall environment. Moreover, the pleasant weather on the day of race added a charm
for the runners as well as spectators in the race. In result of the recent measures, the elite runners this time were able to avoid running in to the tunnel, instead they ran above it. Other efforts for brining improvements to the track included removing the
bottlenecks at the start of the routes; this made it easy for the runners to run the first loop in opposite direction rather easily. The organizers looked rather content with the arrangements as they expressed in a media report that without such measures finishing
under two hours and six minutes could not have been possible.
The race began on Sunday morning when Eberhard van der Laan, the mayor of Amsterdam fired the starting shot which set off 10,241 runners on the track for their marathon race. The swarm of the elite athletes gathered by the Global Sports Communication stayed
together for considerably long time until Getu Feleke the marvellous runner from Ethiopia sped away after 35 kilometres from rest of the group. The athletes remained unbeaten throughout the race. Getu was chased by Wilson Chebet who had been participating
in his debutant race. Ending with a marvellous time of 2 hours, 5 minutes and 44 second, Getu improved his previous personal best time of 2 hours 8 minutes and 4 seconds. After improving his ranking, he has been placed on the rank of eighth fastest in the
world.
Following the tradition of Amsterdam Marathon, the winner of the race has constantly been in the public eye. Chebet too has been impressive by depicting rather impressive finish in just two hours, six minutes and twelve seconds.
The third approaching to the finishing line was Chala Dechase, who took 2 hours, 7 minutes and 23 seconds to cover the distance. Ronald Schro, the Dutch athlete had been in his third Amsterdam race ever. Schro just missed improving his best ever; however,
he was looking rather happy with the results as he was the first from his country to make it to the finishing line.
For women, the race turned to be decisive only after the point at 30 kilometres as Alice Timbilil the Kenyan runner started leading the group eventually leaving them considerably behind her. The girl made it to the finishing line in mere 2 hours 25 minutes
and 3 seconds and carved the history for making it third fastest ever in the history of the Amsterdam. Eyerusalem Kuma, the winner of 2009 finished second with a difference of 2 minutes and 1 second. Other prominent names were of Robe Guta, she stood third
in the race, and Miranda Boostra who finished fourth.
