Amsterdam - Places to see?

I'm visiting for a day at Amsterdam - can someone guide as to what are the best tourist places around?

There are so many places fun to see, but not many that stand out with head and shoulders.

Just roaming around the town you will likely see a lot of nice sights.

A canal boat tour or a bicycle tour might be your way to see them.

If you are into museums, Amsterdam has a big collection:

For the most popular ones the wait can be long, but you can book timed tickets on-line and ignore those who did not, walking straight in.

Anne Franks house and van Gogh museum can have a waiting time of an hour or more in the high season.

In Amsterdam you will find informal street entertainment, Dam square and Leidseplein are well known, but you might happen on a street artist in any part of town.

And of course, there is the oldest part of town, that is now taken over by the oldest profession, and other tolerated but not legal kinds of entertainment.

When you do go there, do not ignore the houses above street level, the houses are the oldest in town and often beautiful, certainly worth seeing.
