Amsterdam Stakes 2010 at the Saratoga Race Course
The Amsterdam Stakes, an American Thoroughbred horse race takes place every year at the end of July, as part of the annual event at the Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York. The race is competed by horses of age three. The distance to be covered is six and a half furlongs. It is a sprint race. The event is Grade II and offers a purse of $ 150,000 presently. Between 1994 and 2005, the race was completed over a distance of six furlongs, while it was a seven furlongs race when it was inaugurated in 1993, as the Screen King Stakes. The race was renamed for a town next to the Saratoga Springs, Amsterdam New York, in Upstate New York in the year 1998.
The Amsterdam Stakes Grade II that took place this year on Monday, 2nd of August, offered a purse of $ 150,000. The leading horse, Essence Hit Man who had a sizzling pace in the early stretch from a length of 8 3/4, was chased by the progressively speeding Discreetly Mine.
Under the jockey John Velazquez, the colt Mineshaft took a lead over all his other competitors in the race in the last furlong, the competition was intense. The horse is owned and bred by E. Paul Robsham and trained by Todd Pletcher. In comparison to Mineshaft completed the six and a half furlongs race in one minute and 14.27 seconds. The colt also trained by Pletcher, who won the 2009 Amsterdam Stakes, Quality Road covered the required distance in 1:13.74. This is however, off the track record.
Discreetly Mine has many victories to his record. However, he could not win the six furlong Jersey Shore Stakes Grade III on the 4th of the July, the race that took place at the Monmouth Park. He won the Grade III Risen Star Stakes. The Kentucky Derby presented by Yum! Brands Grade I was finished by him in a 13th place, and Grade II Louisiana Derby was finished by him in the fourth place. He has proved his calibre to be able to compete against the best racehorses in the country in the Breeder’s Cup Sprint Grade I, scheduled on the 6th of November at Churchill Downs. He has been positioned as one of the best three year old sprinters. His trainer, Pletcher is very much pleased to work with him during the winter. Watching and training him, Pletcher felt like they were on the Derby track. The trainer will consider his participation in the Breeder’s Cup after assessing Discreetly Mine’s performance in the upcoming Grade I King’s Bishop Stakes due on the 28th of August.
One of the competitors under the jockey Chantal Sutherland, Essence Hit Man, ran very swiftly during the opening quarter in 21.45 seconds and covered half a mile in 44.07 seconds. The champion, Discreetly Mine overwhelmed the speed of the pacesetter and established a lead as a challenge offered by Essence Hit Man by a two length in early stretch. The latter did not give up, struggled, and succeeded in finishing on the second place, 1 and a half lengths ahead of the third place finisher, In Jack’s Memory.
One of the seven winners who were starters at the Grade I winning Private Account mare known as Pretty Discreet is the Kentucky bred Discreetly Mine, who is also Discreet Cat’s half brother and Pretty Wild. The former is the winner of the Hill n Dale Cigar Mile Handicap Grade I that took place in 2006, and the latter is the winner of the multiple Grade I placed Stakes.
E. Paul Robsham Stable won $ 90,000 en route the victory of their horse Discreetly Mine. They had to pay $ 3.20, $ 2.60 and $ 2.20. The runner up to the winner, Essence Hit Man had to return $ 5.20 and $ 3.80, while the horse that finished at the third place, In Jack’s Memory paid $ 6.20.
