  1. An Amtrak trip from LA to Seattle is about $380.000 for round trip for one person. Hope this helps. If you have any questions email me at alexmeast@yahoo.com

My wife and I use this particular route twice per year.

First the trains are the Coast Starlight #14 North to Seattle, and the Coast Starlight #11 for your return.

As the others have mentioned, this is slated for 30+ hours on your case.  If you have never done this trip, you are in for a real treat, its quite a nice ride.

If you are traveling Coach your cost will be $206.00 round trip.  This will not include any meals, and the coach ride is not the best choice for a trip of this length, as I will explain in a minute.

The Roomette, which is the first level in the sleeper category, would serve you better, but there is a big jump in cost for your tickets.  you are looking at $926.00 Round trip, however this includes all of your meals that you will be taking on the train.

Amtrak has this billed out on their website, and you can have a look there if you like.

Now before you balk at the price let me clue you in on a few things that you need to know.

In the Roomette, there is a power outlet for a laptop computer or as my wife and I use, our portable DVD Player.  We just jack in a set of head-phones and enjoy the ride.  You are also allowed to use the Starlighter Lounge/Cafe Car and welcome to partake of the Wine Tasting and movies.

So there is lots to do on your trip north to Seattle.  Don't forget your camera.  You are going to need it when you get above Dunsmuir, California.  The view or Mount Shasta from the rails is nothing less than awsome.  Then you get to enjoy Klamath Lake after you leave Klamath Falls, Oregon.

Oregon is the daytime part of the trip into Olympia, Washington.  So you are really going to enjoy the scenery as the train rolls by it.

My wife and I have traveled Coach on this train.  Its nice for a trip if you are only going for a short trip, say from LA into San Jose.  However, my wife and I use this train to go from San Jose, CA into Olympia, WA to visit family, so the trip is slated at 22.5 hours.  Needless to say, we did the Coach option once, and needless to say, we have never done it again.

This is one time, when spending the extra money is in your best interest, for an excellent experience.  I have never had any complaints with the staff on the train, and the food is pretty good too.

But keep in mind that if you are staying in in your berth, you are missing 1/2 the trip.  Get out of that room, and explore the train.  I spend most of my time in the Observation Car or the Lounge anyway.  Its the best place to take pictures from.

I have a feeling that you are really going to enjoy your trip.

Lastly, just so you know.  Travel by rail, is not like flying.  Just don't be in a hurry to get where you are going, and plan your train ride into your vacation time, (meaning an extra day on either end for the train trip). Amtrak is subject to delay's.  Most of the time its Union Pacific playing games with them, or a freight has an issue, and you get to wait for them to clear it up.

One thing is for sure though, rail travel is the safest possible mode of transportation, so Amtrak will always do their best to get you where you need to go, and get you there safely.

Good luck and enjoy your ride!

  3. You can get a coach seat for about $115.  If you want to reserve a compartment, there are several types available aboard the Coast Starlight.  All are more comfortable than coach seating, but run the price up considerably.

Check Amtrak's website for specifics.  You'll be going from city LAX to city SEA.

  4. This is a long trip.  I'd recommend getting a sleeper car unless you're OK sitting in a coach seat for 30 hours.
