  1. The Conductor Or Car Attendant will tell you where to sit it my be open.

  2. The guy above has no clue. When you buy a coach seat, you may sit anyplace in the coach. Be sure you are in the right coach. Ask the conductor standing buy the coach entrance.

  3. your ticket should indicate which car and seat is reserved for you.  Similar to a major airline.

As the on-board train personnel when you get on board to help you find your seat.

  4. Most Amtrak seating depends on which train you are actually on. Most seating, though, is on a first come, first serve basis. Depending on the route, you may be able to upgrade to business class, sleeping quarters, or quiet cars - you will need to check prior to your arrival.

  5. It depends on the train and how busy the train is. If it's busy, somebody will hand you a card with a seat number just before you board the train. If it's not busy, then it's pretty much free seating. However, usually they'll still specify which car to use - sometimes long haul in one car and those going short distances in another car.

Don't worry - you will be directed to the correct part of the train before boarding.
