  1. trains are generally reguarded as the most comfortable of all the transport modes.  they have the largest seats, the most legroom, and frequently have multiple cars that have other activities such as diner, lounge, sleeper, movies, educational guides, etc.

trains can be used for daily commutes.  millions per day do it throughout the country.  generally, in cities, there is a commuter rail agency that operates most of those trains (ie Chicago has Metra, Boston has MBTA, Los Angeles has Metrolink, etc).  amtrak uses many of the same rails upon entering the largest cities, so some people use amtrak to commute too.

but amtrak is primarily an intercity carrier-meaning that they do longer-distance trains, such as intrastate and interstate and international.  some trains are "day" trains, frequently sponsored by the state they operate in (and the biggest state contributors to amtrak are california, oregon, washington, illinois, wisconsin, michigan, new york, north carolina, missouri, oklahoma, vermont, and maine).  hence, you'll often even see 2-10 trains per day on some of these routes.  these trains generally have coach, business class, and cafe cars.

then there are "long-distance" trains, that run interstate, overnight, and cross-country.  these trains generally have coach, sleepers, diners, lounges, baggage cars.  trains such as ny-florida, boston-chicago, chicago-seattle, chicago-los angeles, and so on/so forth are these types of trains.

and then, many times, bus schedules are coordinated with trains at intermodal stations, so that you can travel even more places with a quick and simple transfer.  in fact, amtrak sells many of these bus tickets as an integral part of train travel.

  2. Amtrak is pretty much the majority of the US Rail system. They cover the entire country with their routes. Most people use Amtrak trains for long distance trips in the US but it isn't unheard of for short trips or even commuting between nearby cities.

  3. It can be used for both.  Depends where you get on and off.  In the New York and Boston region, people even commute daily with Amtrak.

  4. Amtrak can be both short or long distance.  It is much more comfortable than bus travel, and some people even prefer it to air travel, because even though it isn't as fast as a plane, you can get up and move around at your leisure, and there is beautiful scenery you can check out from the train.
