Amy Beth Simanton made it to match play in the U.S. Women's Amateur
Amy Beth Simanton is in the match play stage of the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship and will play in the first round of 64.
The Oregon native had a lot going against her in the qualifying stage of the event. The first round was unremarkable with a score of 79 points.
This was unacceptable to Simanton, who managed a slightly better performance in the second round. She scored 70 points and finished the stage with a total of 149 points.
In the second round, she scored four birdies and two bogeys. These two bogeys cost her the final ranking and she was trailing with a deficit of five strokes. Next came the big playoff, which Simanton barely survived.
At one point during the playoff, it appeared that Simanton might not make it to the next stage. She managed to survive despite shooting a bogey at the playoff hole.
The next round has not been great news for Simanton. Instead of drawing an easy opponent for her first match, she will play against the number two seeded Lydia Ko from New Zealand.
Ko was placed second after the final deficit of just one stroke. The leading player is the South Korean Hyo-Joo Kim.
Simanton may not take home fond memories of the event. She faced a long waiting time during the tee off. Moreover, the playoff was a hectic period which put all the fifteen players under great stress.
It was only after a player shot a double bogey that the playoff was resolved and the final leaderboard for the qualifying stage was announced.
So far, the U.S. Women's Amateur has been full of surprises. The top players fluttered down and a relatively unknown player from South Korea took the lead.
Although many experts say that this lead has more to do with luck than golf skills, one thing is sure. Lydia Ko will do her best to regain the lead and make it to the final stages of the match play stage.
This could be bad news for Amy Beth Simanton, who is schedule to start her round of 64 with a match against Ko.
