Amy Smith secures Women’s 50m freestyle title - 2011 British Gas ASA National Championships
Amy Smith dominated the Women’s 50m freestyle event in the open class category, on day three of the 2011 British Gas ASA National Championships.
The championships are intended towards completing the British squad for the upcoming 2011 Shanghai World Championships, this July. The ASA meet provides national swimmers with a chance to qualify for the British swimming team which will contest at the world titles.
Smith presented an astonishing swim in the 50m freestyle and clinched the top position of the event. Loughborough University’s Smith earned the gold medal of the event in a fabulous time of 25.46 seconds and edged out her following swimmers with a slight margin. Ealing’s Georgina Heyn and Plymouth Lea’s Emma Wilkins were only 0.37 seconds slower than Smith and touched the wall for the silver medal, by clocking in an impressive time of 25.83 seconds.
Smith, who qualified as the fastest swimmer into the finals, had earlier produced a fastest swim of 25.69 seconds in the semi-finals.
The 23-year-old Smith was looking for the win from the beginning of the meet, as she was the first swimmer to jump-off from the starting blocks. She revealed her exceptional swimming skills by dominating the 50 metres lap race from the start to the end.
In addition, the arena viewed an immense battle between two swimming stars, who tried to escape each other for the fourth fastest spot. Sophie Smith of Leicester and Rebecca Turner of Sheffield remain engaged with each other in a strong swim, where both of them failed to out-touch each other and touched the finishing wall in a same time of 26.14 seconds.
They were followed by Rebecca Guy and Laura Whitaker, who completed their swims to secure the sixth and seventh fastest places, with a timing of 26.32 and 26.66 seconds, respectively. Mai Alland was the last swimmer to conclude her one-lap swim, as she finished eighth in a time of 26.79 seconds.
