Amy Yang eager to grab first LPGA title
South Korean Amy Yang was one of the most talented young guns at the season-ending CME Group Titleholders 2012, but her dream to win her first LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) title could not materialise.
The LPGA season 2012 has ended, having seen some of the contenders proving their worth, and some still wavering.
Despite losing the tournament, at The TwinEagles Club, Naples, Florida, Yang unveiled best putting skills, troubling her nearest rivals on some holes.
Yang boasts a combination of strength, flexibility and a good driver grip that make her hard to subdue—but not being able to win her first LPGA title has been a matter of concern for her since she turned professional in 2006.
Observers said that the 2012 season saw her perform well in some of the tournaments, and she was ranked among much-improved players on the LPGA Tour. Her new putting strategy proved much more comfortable under tougher weather and course conditions.
Observers pointed out that her LPGA profile may still be a work in progress, but she has shown enough to make herself a known face on the Ladies European Tour (LET)
Having racked up three LET titles so far in her pro career, it is easy to see that the 23-year-old star could be a very strong contender in the months to come.
Yang’s performance at the CME Group Titleholders 2012 was decent in every sense, although she failed to find a spot inside the top 20. She got off to a good start as she carded a 70 in the first round on Thursday.
She maintained her score in the second round as well, helping herself improve position on the leaderboard. But the final two rounds that saw Yang shoot a 73 and 72 receptively did not go as promising as she had wanted them to.
South Korean Na Yeon Choi subdued all the contenders in the lineup, shooting an overall 274 to grab a two-stroke victory against So Yeon Ryu.
Ryu was happy to take the second position, although she came close to beating Choi at one point in the final round.
Ryu said at the end of the first round that her short game improved in the last few weeks.
