Amy Yang jumps to seventh position in world rankings
South Korean Amy Yang has jumped to the seventh position in the Women’s World Golf Rankings following her stunning performance at the US Women’s Open 2012.
The world rankings have seen some major shifts in recent weeks, with South Korean Na Yeon Choi having risen to the second position.
However, Yang has also stunned her rivals and fans by surging six spots within a few days, and she currently stands firm at the seventh spot.
A major reason behind the increase in Yang’s position is her performance in the US Women’s Open 2012, played at Kohler last week. The South Korean star displayed a stellar performance, as she registered a 285
to finish second on the leaderboard.
Analysts said that Yang has proved her mettle by taking a steep jump in the rankings and it is expected that the rising golfer will try to keep the momentum going in the upcoming LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf
Association) events.
Although the 22-year-old South Korean has not been able to win an LPGA tournament so far, she has put herself in a much better position than most of the big names.
At a time when most of the prominent players are witnessing a slump in their rankings, good performances from lesser-known contenders have intensified the level of competition.
Yang got off to a firm start at Kohler and kept the pressure high on rivals right from the start. She displayed a superb game in the third round, as she fired a 69.
The young professional spoke to the media during the event and expressed her confidence in her game. She said that making it to the field of the US Women’s Open was a great success, but performing above average
is even better.
On the other hand, German Sandra Gal has risen to the 29th position in the world rankings thanks to her third-place finish at the US Women’s Open 2012.
“I think just leading up to this event my game started to get a lot better and more solid, and I think the key to it -- I'll probably keep that to myself. I think it's just less thinking and more playing and
really enjoying out there,” Gal said.
When asked what has boosted her confidence on the course, the German star said: “My putting. I think what really turned it around was my putting. I did change putters last week to a Metal X Callaway putter,
and I started rolling it really nicely with it and I think that really, really helped me this week”.
