Amy Yang leads the second round of LPGA Tour Championship
Amy Yang posted a 2-under par 70 at the Grand Cypress Golf Club yesterday to lead the LPGA Tour Championship by three shots. With an amazing opening round of 67, Yang is the best player on the amazing course in Orlando, Florida right now.
For the Tour Championship of the LPGA, it was expected that South Koreans would steal the spotlight, but it wasn’t Yang who the prediction was hinted at. The leaders of the money list, Jiyai Shin and Na Yeon Choi were expected to play really well since they
were competing for the end of the year awards. Not much was expected from the little known Amy Yang who hasn’t won on the LPGA yet. Leading the tournament for two consecutive rounds, there is a high possibility the 21 year old is aiming for her first win on
the LPGA. Her solo lead in the second round was the first time she has ever lead a tournament in such a way.
Yang is leading ahead of Seon Hwa Lee, who was the co leader of the opening round. Yesterday, she shot a one-over 73 and hence dropped from the top of the leader board. Another player who played decently was Maria Hjorth, who had the best round of the day
with a 68 and could have taken the lead if she hadn’t messed up on her front nine holes. Hjorth posted three bogeys but made up for that by carding four birdies on the back nine holes.
The leader of the second round said that she was trying to give her best performance. According to Yang, the course setup was very difficult, hence she would try to play it very safe. Amy came into this tournament with five top ten finishes in the 21 tournaments
she competed in.
Where the unknown golfers are making headlines, all the golf fans must be wondering where the stars of the LPGA are. It appears as if only two will remain in the race for the player of the year. The way things are going, Yani Tseng seems like the strongest
candidate. The only way Tseng won’t become the player of the year is if the American Cristie Kerr wins the tournament.
”I’d be lying if I said I didn't care about all that’s going on this week,” Kerr said. “But I've got a job to do on every shot and I'm just trying to take care of that, and you know, try to roll the rock, make some puts. I think I've putted kind of average
for me the last two days, and I think if I can putt a little bit above average the next two days and play fairly well, I'll have a good chance at it.”
The Japanese golf star, Ai Miyazato, posted an 80 in the first round and followed with a 72. Due to her performance, Ai is clearly out of the race for the Rolex award. Shin, posted a 77-75 and is also no longer a threat to Tseng. Choi, who is leading the
money list and the Vare Trophy list, carded a 73 yesterday and finished with a 71 today. Looking at the way she’s going, Choi isn’t a big threat to Tseng.
It appears that the weather in Florida is really getting the best of the ladies. Despite the ear muffs and the jackets, the player still struggled with the chilly weather on the golf course. Only 10 out of the 120 players were under par on the field. This
really shows how well Yang coped up with the challenge and managed to play well in the cold weather. Due to darkness, 37 players will complete their second round early Saturday morning. With two rounds covered, Yang really hopes to end her 2010 season on a
good note by winning the LPGA Tour Championship.
