Question:

An American Thinking Of Studying Abroad?

I'm an American from NYC. I'm 18 and plan on attending college next year. I've always had my heart set on going to college here in the city that i was born/raised in, but lately ive been wondering how it'd be to go abroad for my college experience and then come back to the states. This idea may seem farfetched and Its not even a serious consideration, but its just a thought. What precautions would I have to take when considering this? My first idea was somewhere in Europe, like England/UK areas. What should i take into consideration when considering this? Has anyone ever done this? If so, how did it go?

Thanks.

  1. I just did the same answer for another gal...You should get your degree from an American University.  They are, for the most part, the best in the world, and you will get the best education that way, and the most marketable degree.  DO do a study abroad year.  Do a year, if you can afford it, rather than a semester.  It's a more intense experience, and if you are going for foreign language, it's a MUST, as the language learning doesn't really set in until about the end of that first semester.   You don't want to just begin to learn the language, then have to come home.

I'm really not sure it's possible to get a student visa for the full time you need to do a full university program (which is five years, not four, in Europe).  But you won't be able to take a job, so that's something to consider.  Also, all the social stuff you get at an American University just doesn't exist over there.  They don't have clubs, and greeks and teams and such.  You would be missing out on all of that.

  2. Hi, my dear Alison...

Well.... my darling... I've done it the "other way around" ...coming from Europe & studying in the US, which was a great experience! Any time, you go "overseas", get aquainted with a different culture, interesting people, etc., it "broadens your horizon"... smile!!!

Now to get to the "nitty-gritty"... Sure, you can come "abroad", the U.K -(London=- is a great place to study due to the fact, that you don't have to aquire a "foreign" language. As far as any grants go, you would have to get in touch with the university of your choice -or- are you being "sponsored" by your parents??

Over here in Germany in my hometown (Trier), we have a large university with  M A N Y  foreign students from all over the world. I can ask my neighbor (he studies mathematics at present) on the details you may want to know. I give you my email adr.: a.granderson@yahoo.de - so you can get bback with me "after the holiday"... Happy 4th of July to you !!!All my love from Germany.... Annette****
