Anyone know what would be a good elective choice for becoming a neurosurgeon - health science?

Basically the choices of electives are AP Statistics,

AP Micro/Macroeconomics, AP European History, AP Environmental Science, AP Gov't & Politics, Vocal Ensemble Honors (Fun), or, maybe AP Zoology.

  1. Those don't sound like "electives." Those sound like normal core classes. Ap Environmental would be the best out of those along with Zoology.

  2. take a break from all the science and stuff...join a music class!! im in orchestra and its really easy and fun!!!!!! i like memorize my music so i dont have to carry around a folder full of papers!!

  3. WHOA. Key Club is awesome! So is Teen Trendsetters :)

Well, I took AP Environmental Science and AP European History

I *hated* Euro b/c I couldn't keep track of all the LOUIS THE 14TH AND THE 15TH, ETC..

    I got a 1 in the AP Exam.. :(

    Although my teacher was nice!!

AP Environmental has been my hardest class in high school, yet I completely LOVED it.

I learned so much more than about the env, it fascinates me!

:) GO GREEN, *DEF TAKE IT IN HIGH SCHOOL*

Plus, my teacher was abs. amazinggggggggggggggggggggggggggg :D

I've also wanted to be a Zoologist when I was older, so IDK.

I would love to take AP Zoology! :)

GOOD LUCK, DEF. APES! [AP ENV. SCIENCE]

  4. idk...i've never heard of those types of electives. zoology sounds fun, though

  5. If you're serious about committing to the 10-12 years of hard core schooling and residency to become a neurosurgeon, then I'd say forget high school electives.  Talk to your guidance counselor about any college extension courses your high school offers.  Those are usually cooperative classes with local community colleges where advanced high school students can take a class for college credit while still in high school.  Sometimes the classes are taught in the high school, usually it involves you setting up your schedule around attending a class at the local college during school hours.

If your school doesn't have a program already, and I'd be surprised if they offer a zoology course, then call the local community college and get permission to take a 100-level class during the school year.  If they give you the go-ahead, take that to your high school guidance counselor when school starts and tell them you want to schedule study hall/lunch to accommodate the class time at the college, and just go on your own.

You should take either a biology or chemistry course.

This route also looks good on a college application.  And you're going to need that if you want to get into a pre-med program (or pre-med like program such as biology) at a top school.  You'll want to get into a top school if you're targeting neurosurgery, because you'll need to get into a top medical school when the time comes.  Neurosurgery is the cream of the crop when it comes to doctors.

    Good luck!

  6. well for that career, you are going to want to obviously focus on your sciences, especially biology and chemistry. that being said, you are probably going to have to take a statistics as well, but that isn't really something you want to take twice if you know what i mean, so i wouldn't take that in high school. so i would suggest

    1) AP Micro/Macroeconomics

    2) AP Zoology

both will have to be taken in some form in college so i would choose whichever one you think would interest you more. also look at who is teaching the classes and make sure you like this person. good luck and thats a great field to go into... big bucks ;)
