Question:

An all-black baby guppy?

Just wondering if any guppy breeders out there can tell me how common it is for a baby guppy to be all black. This one is the result of inbreeding of a brother and sister. Neither of them were black when they were born, and they aren't now as adults, so I'm guessing this must be a recessive gene being expressed. Anyone have any other opinions/ideas?

  1. I (half accidentally) bred some Guppies in a filtered bucket (about 30 gallons) outside recently, and one of the 10 fry that have survived to this point (receiving no special care other than feeding) was pure black, while all the others are a fairly drab color.  The frequency with which pure black fry will appear depends greatly on the likely muddled genetics of the parents and the generations before.  I would very much agree with the all-black fry gene being recessive.
