Question:

An alternative to braces wax?

my spring broke and was cutting up my cheek so I cut it out with some wire cutters. Now the stub is very sharp, and when I poked it with my finger, it wouldnt stop bleeding for 5 minutes. Its not bothering my mouth, but I am afraid when it does, it will get stuck in my cheek. I dont have braces wax. Any suggestions?

  1. Go and get it fixed.

  2. there are gels that you can get from the chemist to stop it hurting you should it start. It probably won't get caught on your mouth but even so i would book an appointment to get it fixed.

  3. You should call your orthodontist to get this fixed as soon as possible. Not only will the stub cause pain to your cheek, but it could result in an infection.

Dental wax or dental silicone are the best products to put on the metal stub until you can get it fixed. Dental Wax is available in most drugstores and supermarket "health and beauty" sections. If you can't find it, then you could substitute silicone earplugs that are use for swimming (break off a very small piece of the new clean earplug, of course). However, silicone sometimes doesn't stick as well as regular wax -- the area usually has to be totally dry for the silicone to stick.

If you're really in a total bind, a small piece of sugar-free chewing gum might do the trick, if you can get it to stick over the metal stub.

But all this aside -- you need to go in to your orthodontist and have the spring replaced.
