An analysis of Ferrari in 2011 Formula 1 season so far and their chances for constructors’ title
The 2011 Formula 1 season has been about Red Bull Racing in terms of both of the championships as they have been dominating almost each race single-handedly.
McLaren and Ferrari are the most established teams of Formula 1 and losing the championship each year costs them more than it costs RBR or any other team on the grid.
Both of the teams have not been able to show their dominance or competitiveness since the 2009 Formula 1 season. That is when some new rules were introduced to the sport including the introduction of the Kinetic Energy Recovery System.
Since then, RBR have been flourishing and in 2010, they secured both the constructors’ and drivers’ titles. The constructors’ title was secured quite easily by them but the battle for the drivers’ title was fought until the very last race of the 2010 Formula
1 season.
Nevertheless, McLaren have performed quite effectively as a constructor and they are the only danger to RBR in terms of constructors as Ferrari has been awfully disappointing since 2009 in that field.
The team signed Fernando Alonso in 2010 and since then, he is the only driver performing up to the mark while Felipe Massa has been struggling to score good statistical performances.
Alonso led the drivers’ championship until the final race of the 2010 Formula 1 season which proves that the 2010 Ferrari car was competitive enough to challenge the top running teams of the sport as well.
Felipe Massa on the other hand finished in 6th place and he was the only driver out of the top running teams who did not compete for the title until the final couple of races of the season.
When a team needs a good constructors’ result, they rely on both of their drivers and like this year, Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel have been performing really well. They are challenging one another at each venue as a result of which they push each other
to the very limit and in the end secure the best possible results for RBR.
Massa has not been pushing Alonso to his limit and he has definitely not been performing up to his limits either. That is the reason why the team is struggling to score some good overall results.
Ferrari are currently in 3rd place more than 200 points adrift of the championship leaders RBR. Fernando Alonso on the other hand is in 3rd place in the drivers’ standings and is competitively competing
for the 2nd place alongside Jenson Button, Mark Webber and Lewis Hamilton.
McLaren are in 2nd place in the constructors’ standings and they are 138 points short of RBR at the moment. They are still mathematically alive in the championship while Ferrari are not.
Ferrari are not even in a good position to challenge McLaren for the 2nd place in the constructors’ standings and the only solution for them is to find a good 2nd driver which is something they are already doing.
There are rumours that they are interested in signing a new young driver after the 2012 Formula 1 season. The team must admit by now that they need a good driver alongside Alonso immediately and giving 3 years to a single driver and watching him fail each
time is just unfair for the rest of the drivers.
