An assessment of Liverpool’s targets in the summer transfer window – English Premier League
As the English Premier League season has reached his eventual conclusion, different clubs will now dip into the summer transfer window to reinforce their squads. One of such club’s is Liverpool. After having an abysmal first part
of the Premier League season where the Merseyside club was at times flirting with relegation rather than competing for a UEFA Champions League place, Liverpool secured a sixth place finish at the end of the season.
Sixth place finish means that the Reds won’t be playing in any of European football’s top two competitions next season which is already a huge blow to the club of Liverpool’s European pedigree. However, the Reds remain optimistic
about their title winning chances for the 2011-2012 season due to Kenny Dalglish’s management position at the club. Kenny took over at Liverpool after Roy Hodgson’s departure in January 2011 but since his appointment as the club’s manager, the former Celtic
striker has turned Liverpool into a formidable force.
Whilst acknowledging the fact that Liverpool failed to secure silverware in the 2010-2011 season, Kenny’s impact at the club has been positive to say the least. In the winter transfer window, Kenny was in the thick of things as
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 and then went onto buy Luis Suarez for 23 million pounds and Andy Carroll for 35 million pounds from Newcastle United.
However now in the summer transfer window, Liverpool are scouring the scene for one central midfielder and two wingers. Liverpool’s squad has got most of its bases covered but the Reds really need two wingers to service the likes
of Suarez and Carroll. Whilst Suarez is seen as a player who can conjure something out of nothing from inside the opposition’s penalty area, Carroll is someone who thrives on crosses and service from out wide.
Unfortunately for the Englishman, Liverpool were lacking wide players in the 2010-2011 Premier League season. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Raul-Meireles-c30678 as a wide sided midfielder
rather than fielding any conventional wingers. Now in the summer transfer window Liverpool are linked to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ashley-Young-c6813 who is also thought to be a target for Manchester United.
If the Reds do manage to capture the services of Young, he will be a welcome addition to Liverpool’s squad. His versatility as a winger is already well documented as Young can play either on the left side or the right side of Liverpool’s
attack. Moreover, he can also play as an offensive midfielder. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Charles-c8808 N’Zogbia is yet another possible transfer target for Liverpool. The French midfielder who has played as a winger for various sides in his career is currently at Wigan Athletic.
The Latics only just managed to secure a place in the English Premier League on the last day of the 2010-2011 season by avoiding relegation. N’Zogbia will give a perfect balance to Liverpool’s side and he will also give them a
good option when it comes to set pieces. Not only that, Charles is seen as a “cheap” transfer target as his price tag is being touted around at about 10 to 15 million pounds.
On the other hand, Liverpool have also expressed their interest in signing http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Lee-Cattermole-c21868. The tough tackling Sunderland player is known for his robust approach to the game but if Liverpool are to thrive defensively than they do
need a player like Cattermole who will get stuck into their opponents and break up the oppositions’ attacks more often than not.
All in all, Liverpool on the right track with their transfer targets. Kenny seems to be targeting the right sort of players who are destined to improve the Liverpool squad, something that needs to be done if the Merseyside Reds
need to qualify for the UEFA Champions League in the coming season.
